Amfiteatrum-Pécs2010 Stage on Sziget

As well as one of the greatest jazz guitar virtuosos, Al Di Meola, the most promising talent of the Portuguese fado singers, Ana Moura, a traditional Romanian tango singer, Oana Cătălina Chiţu, or Emily Loizeau, experimenting with overwhelming, wild and meditative kinds of music, will appear – just like several other international and national performers – on Sziget, on the Amfiteatrum-Pécs2010 Stage.

Balkan folk music, excellent female perfomers, clash of cultures, mediterranean excitement and the respect of traditions - all these are featured in the varied program series of the Amfiteatrum-Pécs2010 Stage on this year's Sziget.

The festival kicks off with the Balkan Day, including Vujicsics Együttes and Oana Cătălina Chiţu, promising an extremely exciting act with the performance of Bucharest Tango. Romanian singer Oana Cătălina Chiţu is the only singer of her generation who presents a really credible, yet free interpretation of the traditional Romanian tango, this almost forgotten genre.

The Day of the Divas highlights the female performers, for example Elsa Valle from Budapest/Cuba. Her brilliantly trained voice and unique style resembles the authentic atmosphere of the Cuban world that was made famous by Buena Vista Social Club. She's not contented with all this; the respect of traditions is mixed with current, new ambitions and improvisational opportunities in her musicality and singing style. The main attraction of the day will be the charming performance of Emily Loizeau from France. Listening to her music, the world of Rimbaud, Jack London and perhaps Kerouac bursts upon our sight, as this fragile singer experiments bravely with overwhelming, wild and meditative kinds of music as well. Being bilingual, her idols are fine representatives of contemporary French chanson and Anglo-Saxon music: Georges Brassens, Renaud, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Nina Simone, Randy Newman.

The Hungarian Multicultural Day, presenting exciting fusions and various nations, starts with a virtual clink, the drinking songs of Vivat Bacchus. Kerekes Band plays world music based on Hungarian folk, with a pulsating and energetic sound that includes dynamics and vehemence as well as simplicity and freeness. We will also have the chance to welcome László Hortobágyi and the Gāyan Uttejak Orchestra. The traditional Hindu-Mohamedan and the classic Asian musical worlds will be heard with original instrumentation, but also realizing the live-electronic sound synthesis guided by traditional instruments in the performances of GUO. The band has achieved great success all over the world. They have released more than 50 records published by Hungarian and international labels, they have been awarded in Germany for the reinterpretation of folk music and they have also received noted acknowledgement in New Zealand, France and Spain.

We will be enlivened by a Mediterranean Day on Saturday, the most promising performer of which will probably be the female trio HaBanot Nechama from Israel. Setting off from the famous Jah-Pan Club in Tel-Aviv, they have become steady guests at Israeli and European festivals. Their playful songs performed in English and Hebrew with an inspiration from ethno, jazz and reggae reach the goal that had been set: they offer comfort. They will be followed by the new star of fado, Ana Moura, from Portugal. She is one of the most talented performers of the young generation of Portuguese fado singers. Thanks to her rich, deep contralto voice, she gained reputation all over the world quickly. Ana has been greatly influenced by the work of the legendary singer Amalia Rodrigues, whose unique voice, expressive rendering and spirituality made her the queen of fado.

The most anticipated performance of the week, Al Di Meola's New World Sinfonia, will also be presented on this day. In recent years, Meola has often played concerts with a formation called Midsummer Night Quartet, where his partners are guitarist Peo Alfonsi, accordion player Fausto Beccalossi as well as the excellent conga player, Gumbi Ortiz, of Cuban origin. On the Amfiteatrum Stage, they will be joined by two other musicians, Péter Kaszás and Viktor Miranda, to enchant this August night with their music.

On the Day of Traditions, Szélkiáltó (also from Pécs), celebrating its existence of 35 years, will share the stage with Kaláka, also celebrating an anniversary, namely of standing on the stage for 40 years. The final act, the Whirling Dervishes from Istanbul, will close the program of Sziget with a spiritual journey. Not by accident, as the Turkish city will also be the Cultural Capital of Europe in 2010.
