La Fura dels Baus at Sziget
Sziget Festival is one of the most colourful events on the European festival circuit, which – beside the great variety of musical programmes – tends to offer the cream of many other cultural genres as well. This year’s main attraction is a special performance composed exclusively for Sziget Festival by one of the world's most prestigious spectacle theatre troupes with a huge fanbase (12-13-14-15-16th August).
The Barcelona based La Fura dels Baus celebrates its thirtieth anniversary in 2009. The everchanging, ever re-shaping troupe has never ceased to seek new challenges within the art of perfomance since its foundation. Their performances always amaze critics and audiences alike. There's definitely no exaggeration in saying that since their 1983 staging of the performance "Accions", La Fura dels Baus is considered more of a cult-group than a theatre company. Throughout the years they have developed their own language, style and performance genre. Since 1990 the company have staged a number of dramatic plays, digital theatre shows, operas, and something they call "macroshow". They've made several films, always seeking to progress, experimenting with new elements within the realm of theatre.
Between 1979 and 1983 La Fure dels Baus operated as a street theatre. The experiences gained during this period served to develop the company a "new trend in theatre" that blends different stage elements and displays versatile perfomances. La Fura's main innovations are the highly successful involvement of the audience into the play and the flexibility of the performance that is always adapted to the characteristics of the given venue. The term "La Fura language" refers to this mixture of intention and technics, which recently has been used to describe the likewise performances by several other companies.
The beginning of the nineties brought a widening of repertoire. Beside street performances plays, digital theatre acts, operas and contemporary theatre projects were staged as well. The opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Barcelona 1992 watched by 500 million viewers all over the planet is also attached to the name La Fura dels Baus. 2009 began with three monumental shows in Chile watched by seventy thousand viewers altogether. The Catalans are preparing with a brandnew show for Sziget Festival. In "The Beat in the Dark" stage, circal, acrobatic elements and the music are equally important.
The music was chosen with a view to the Budapest location. Another special feature is the involvement of not only Hungarian audience but also several Hungarian artists and volunteers. In the final scene sixty Hungarians will be lifted up high in the air. The musical collage will include the works of Hungarian composers and are to be completed with live music played by Hungarian musicians and a singstress. This goes how important to Sziget it is to create new ways of performing through international cooperations beside the myriads of musical acts. La Fura dels Baus at Sziget is a perfect example of this experimenting attitude. This goes to show how the performance of almost one hour length is to be seen every night from the 12th to the 16th of August on the Hillside. As a monumental installation an eight meters high, three storey tower plus a Giant Wheel will be featured in the act.
