One of the most important popular acts of the last 15 years, Prodigy redefined electronic dance music during the second half of the 90s. Prodigy gave a face, defined a sound and brought credit to electronic dance music, and lifted it from the underground to the mainstream of popular music, and onto pop and rock stages. Riding on the wave created by the acid house movement, Prodigy formed in the early 1990s with their first LP coming out in 1992, although it was their breakthrough second album, 1995’s Music For The Jilted Generation that contained all the components that would make Prodigy a success. Beside the exciting, colourful electronic sound, the album was also filled with quasi-classic hits (Voodoo People, Poison, No Good) that are built up from easily remembered verses and choruses. On top of that, the music was also accompanied with real faces: demonic dancer Keith Flint, formidable looking Maxim and the awesome studio wizard, Liam Howlett. However, their big break was yet to come with the release of their masterpiece, 1997’s The Fat Of The Land. As Firestarter and Smack My Bitch Up became anthems of an era, Prodigy grew to be one of the most successful pop acts in the world. At that time no one would have guessed that it would take them another six years to put their next album of new material together. But that is precisely what happened. Becoming insecure right at the peak of their career, the band sank into a creative crisis at the end of 1990s. Having announced the impending arrival of their fourth album and subsequently cancelling it several times, Always Outnumbered Never Outgunned finally hit the shelves in 2004. It comprised a mixture of up-to-date electro, funk, hip-hop, breakbeat and dance music. It was completed without the collaboration of Liam Howlett’s earlier band mates, who instead enrolled several renowned guests (such as Princess Superstar, Kool Keith, Liam Gallagher and Juliette Lewis) to appear on the album. Even though it did not repeat the practically unrepeatable success of The Fat Of The Land, it has put Prodigy back on the frontline of pop music.
